Every year camera manufacturers bring us new and ‘improved’ equipment.
As the ‘new’ is introduced the ‘old’ becomes less popular and its value often falls. This can represent a real opportunity for anyone wanting high quality equipment at a budget price.
Take the Nikon 300mm f2.8 AF I lens as an example. It was introduced in 1992 and for almost 5 years was the must-have lens for professional sports photographers. It was updated in 1996 when Nikon launched the AF-S version. Nikon subsequently brought us the AF-S II, VR, and finally VRII Nano. Are the later lenses better? Yes. Are they significantly better? No!
So what’s the difference in price? The current VRII Nano sells new for a little under £5,000. We’ve just sold the AF I version shown above for £995. An astonishing saving!
Of course, the price differential isn’t always so dramatic but with the right knowledge (or the right dealer to ask!) and a bit of patience it’s possible to find top-quality equipment at substantially discounted prices.
